Thomas Lovejoy (left) and William Laurance (right), both former presidents of the ATBC, were jointly honored on June 18 in Madrid, Spain as the inaugural winners of the BBVA Frontiers in Ecology and Conservation Biology award. This prestigious award was presented for their groundbreaking, long-term studies of forest fragmentation and dedicated efforts to help conserve the Amazon rainforest, including development of the innovative debt-for-nature swap. Other BBVA awards were presented to leaders in biomedicine, physics, architecture, and other fields. The juries that decided the BBVA awards included many prestigious scientists, including several Nobel Laureates. Laurance and Lovejoy both received commemorative certificates and original artwork, and will share a cash prize of 400,000 euros. Visit ATBC website. Read Mongabay.com
